Summer has arrived and also high temperatures increasing people’s desire to swim one more year in the sea. But is it dangerous to expose babies in the sun? Should you use sunscreen to protect them? We will answer all these questions in this article!

Exposing babies in the sun? 7 tips for summer

Is it advisable to expose the newborn baby in the sun?

The general recommendation of pediatricians is not to go to the beach with babies under 6 months. As an exception, you can take a walk before 11 a.m. and in the late afternoon, avoiding too much exposure.

Sunscreens are not always the solution…

Children under 6 months old should not be given any protection of this kind, their skin is too sensitive and they also have the risk of dehydration very quickly at the beach.

…and you have to know how to choose the right one

From 6 months on, you can opt for this type of protective solution, but not just anyone. Always look at the label: the right ones are those with a broad spectrum, i.e. those that protect against both UVA and UVB rays

The recommendation of the Spanish Academy of Dermatology is to opt for protection with physical and mineral filters for children under 3 years of age. From that age onwards, they do advise opting for chemical filters with a minimum factor of “30” and labeled as “childish”.

Age, a determining factor

Protection from solar radiation is important throughout life, but it is especially important during the first three years of life and generally throughout childhood and adolescence. In those years our skin is more sensitive.

Watch out for heatstroke!

Children under the age of three are especially prone to heatstroke. Their body regulation capacity is not fully developed, so if you go to the beach, don’t forget to worry about them drinking fluids frequently.

An umbrella is not enough protection

Did you know that the sand on the beach reflects the sun’s radiation very effectively? This means that even if you’re under the umbrella, you can get burned easily and also your baby!

Sunscreen clothing is your best ally

Yes, it is. Look for information on garments with UPF (sun protection factor) and choose those that are labeled with at least a number 25.

In short, always keep in mind that – as the Spanish Association of Pediatrics reminds us every year – babies in the sun are especially vulnerable. And enjoy the summer!
