Vomiting in children is very common. It is a symptom that occurs especially during childhood, so in this article, we will try to explain its causes and how is the best way to act if your child is in that situation. Let’s start!

Causes of Vomiting in Children

The first thing you should know is that vomiting is a common symptom in children. Although sometimes it can be the first manifestation of a serious process, in most cases, it is related to benign conditions. In any case, do not hesitate to consult your pediatrician, who will indicate the best way to act at all times.

Gastritis: It is one of the most common causes of vomiting in children. It is usually the first symptom to appear, but after about 12 hours diarrhea can also occur.

Food Poisoning: Eating food in poor condition can also cause vomiting soon after. It is caused by bacteria present in food that has deteriorated over time.

Allergies or intolerances: There are allergic reactions that occur in the form of vomiting, even in the youngest children. Peanuts or seafood are some of the most common.
Another possibility is to suffer intolerance to any kind of food, such as lactose, which is not the same as an allergy. While intolerance is a digestive problem, when it comes to an allergy, there is a reaction from the immune system.

Dizziness: Because of genetics, there are children more predisposed to suffer from dizziness when they travel by car, boat, or bus. This can cause vomiting sometimes.

Other causes: The causes can be very diverse -the ones mentioned are the most common- so it is always advisable to consult your pediatrician if vomiting appears in children, especially if it is kept for more than 24 hours.

How to deal with vomiting in children?

It’s normal to be unsure of what to do if a child is nauseous and starts to vomit. Any person was born with all knowledge of the world. That’s why we’re going to tell you how pediatricians recommend acting step by step.

  1. Calm the child. Anxiety is a very unpleasant feeling, so the most important thing is that the baby feels protected and accompanied.
  2. While vomiting, hold the head of your baby by placing your hand on his/her forehead.
  3. If your baby has any other symptoms such as blood in his vomit or stool, general discomfort, abdominal pain, or signs of dehydration, call your health care provider immediately.

If your baby does not have these symptoms, it is advisable to lie him down in a lateral position, give him water or serum in small sips in short intervals of time and keep an eye on his evolution.
